Colita in Context

Spanish photographer Colita focused on the hypocritical nature of the Spanish society regarding female standards of decency and beauty. Similar to Meiselas, Colita is primarily known for her portraits of royal and famous characters in Spain. Also, her coverage of the Spanish transition and protest, yet there are a few collections in which Colita attempts to reconstruct the portrayal of the female body in Spain. Colita had a strong atraction for the gypsy community that was stigmatized by the Spanish goverment. Her work is mostly of satire in how masculinity imagines the female body in the workforce and church. Within this context, she also made relevant the idea that females were sexual beings and that the male figure had already controlled the Spanish female for too long. Colita was also one of the few individuals that gave coverage to trans protest or feminist protest and published them in national newspapers.
